Nugateau, Trinity Bellwoods, Toronto
Nugateau specialises in a single type of pastry, and that’s the humble éclair. But here, it’s in a pimped out form. There’s many themed around holidays and some that are just straight up dessert-decadence flavours. This was a visit at the counter within the bright Sak’s Food Hall. After a sample I couldn’t resist getting my lips on a full size of one of these beauties. My choice was an on-trend Easter-themed eclair. The Golden Eggs features whipped milk chocolate ganache, with a hint of salted caramel, gold dusted chocolate eggs and gold chocolate squares. It all seems quite fancy but was a lot more basic in taste with the theme feeling a bit pasted on (literally).
There’s a few out there savoury eclair options, as well as some more wilder sweet flavour options. I didn’t quite find this one especially remarkable and the pastry wasn’t my favourite that I’ve had. If it wasn’t the sole product on offer I’d be a bit less critical and if I went for something not-chocolate I might have enjoyed it a bit more. So far, I still rate the eclairs from Cacao in Melbourne as my favourites for this category.
