On Melbourne Cup Day this year I forewent the usual festivities but still headed westwards to check out my friends’ new flat, as well as a local brunch spot in their suburb of Kensington. The Premises seemed well rated and was open on this ‘bank holiday’ so it was the choice for the afternoon. The place, with a large dining area seemingly stretching multiple stores, was packed and there was a good buzz about. And that wasn’t simply because of the constant of showground-bound trains passing through the tracks next door.
The menu here is mostly brunchy with some dashes of Middle Eastern influences. Service was good and dishes came unexpectedly fast. Matt was first up with his choice of The Greens ($17.50), with charred corn, seasonal greens, roasted garlic, sesame puree and two poached eggs. Feedback was everything form bread to egg was tasty and was a hefty-sized portion.
For me it was a case of food envy as mine wasn’t quite as good as the other two. The choice here was the Buttermilk poached chicken salad ($18.50) with heirloom tomato fattoush, tahini crackers and saffron labneh. The top quarter of the dish was the letdown with the chicken being like the Middle East in being arid and desperately needing the labneh to be digestible. All the salad components were fine and the use of parsley and mint kept the components interesting at least.
Jamie’s was last up and probably was the best of the three. His was the Nana’s trifle french toast ($18.50) with mango, vanilla custard, raspberry jelly and a sherry syrup. The consensus on this was that it was a flavoursome and interesting angle on the french toast product with a tasteful touches on the garnish. The guys are definitely keen to come back to The Premises to check out more of the menu ,and I haven’t been put off entirely either.
