Mama Tran Dumplings, South Melbourne

For a cheap and easy Chinese meal on a market day, it’s hard to go past Mama Tran in the South Melbourne Markets. Correction: it’s not really hard to go past as it’s in the middle of the food area. The left side of the stall offers take home dumplings and asian items and the right side had all your quick fix meals. They also do dumplings to order, but I haven’t ventured into that territory yet.

$6 for a small and $7 for a large, it’s easy on the pocket and the food is usually decent. My sweet and sour pork (which was meant to be lemon chicken but I spoke/ pointed to the wrong thing) wasn’t too bad, but the meat was a bit chewy so that probably wasn’t the greatest sign. The sauce is a little bit nuclear as well, but tastes alright. Mama Tran has a farmily feeling to it and the rice wrap I took home to heat was good. Somewhat on the after meal dryness (MSG-ish?) so watch out for that.

Pro tip: make sure to announce our orders nice and clear, and if you’ll really looking to save a buck the prices sometimes go cheap towards the end of day
