KooKoo, South Melbourne
It’s great to be back in Melbourne and funnily enough, also back in my old (work hood) of South Melbourne again too. Over the course of just under two years, not too much has changed in the city. But KooKoo is one of the new burger options in the area (along with whatever a Ziggy’s is) taking over the space from the (super inconsistent) Vietnamese eatery Mr Cyclo.
I first came across KooKoo as it was offering a deal via Groupon. Not exactly the Michelin star of excellence. Overall I was content with my $10 burger combo which also came with fries and a drink. Without the deal, the prices ($12-$13) are typical of what you would find in any burger eatery.
Service is all nice, and it comes out pretty quick for what it is. There’s about 2/3 other tables with diners and I’ve always enjoyed the multi-level seating options.
Wacky Burger Combo Time
Their menu is a tinge of Asian-fusion burger combinations, which I’m not sure really works. I pushed the limit myself ordering my first ever fusion of beef and fried chicken in a single burger. The name of the beast was the “No Joke”. It includes such components as a beef patty, fried chicken, bacon, sweet chilli mayo and pickled jalapeno. Not a vegetable in sight. But one more sauce, but peanut.
I found the burger way too extra and too heavy. It is a proper chicken piece, not a patty. All the components separately were fine, and the peanut sauce is enjoyable. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more had it come with chicken satay rather than a beef-chicken burger. Standard-ish thick cut fries and standard packaged drinks. I don’t think any of the burger options would have me running back in a hurry, when there are so many other very excellent burger options around the area. Stokers I’m looking at you.
