Dead Man Espresso, South Melbourne
On this very sunny Wednesday morning, we headed around the corner for a brunch bite with our publisher rep to a cosy corner cafe called Dead Man Espresso. It’s a place that does get a crowd even at corporate hours, but it’s never terribly problematic.
I highly recommend the order of scones but on this occasion I went a bit larger with the rhubarb, passionfruit and lemon curd hot cakes. This was a good dish with a zesty, citrus sauce, but I felt the rhubarb in the centre didn’t quite belong or wasn’t quite poached enough to be sliced and served as a proper hot cake component. The hot cakes themselves were done competently.
The menu changes as bit as the current options differ to what we had. This table also had a bircher muesli with seasonal fruit and a savoury choice with corn fritters and poached eggs. The girls seemed content with their dishes.
Overall Dead Man does a fairly good job of hitting out some pretty meals in a cool setting. The coffee is solid too.
