Cafe 51, South Melbourne
Tales of the legendary burgers here long been spread in our office, so it’s such a killer than it took me two years to make my way over the 12 minute stroll to Cafe 51. These are burgers worth stopping for, as well as burgers that will stop your heart. The venue is super busy but there wasn’t any of the terrible wait I had been warned of. I went the much more modest route going for the CFK which was a fried chicken fillet, with cheese, bacon, chipotle, and BBQ sauce.
I realise the general appeal is the massive freak burgers but I couldn’t bring myself to eat such a mammoth. At $10 for the CFK this was awesome pricing and makes all the many trips to Grill’d seem so cheated (granted, a good chunk of those were free from the Polished Man promo). This was a very good burger with a non-sweating bun, excellently crisp bacon and a hearty fillet of meat in a spiced coating. On the side I went with the Power cake ($3), which was a triple fried, triple battered potato cake. The coating was flavoursome with a similar set of spices and the layers of batter were highlgy satisfying. Definitely worth checking out and deserving of it’s burger crown.
