Bakers Central, South Melbourne
For the longest time I didn’t realise this place had a name, it was largely known as the bakery shop inside the Spotlight Centre, also known as South Melbourne Central. It of course, has a name. It’s usually the cabinet of delightful looking bakery items and pies that gathers the most of my attention, and everything is well priced giving it that neighbourhood family store type of feeling. Recently Bakers Central has ventured into doing Asian/ Vietnamese-styled meals as well.
I had the barbecue chicken vermicelli salad and for under ten dollars you get a hot thigh piece of meat garnished with plenty of vegetables making for a light and fresh mealtime. A solid dressing is included and it comes out speedily as well. I would say there’s some inconsistency as I’ve had varied experiences in their meal options such as the BBQ pork on rice. I’ve had exactly one amazing experience of the roast pork on rice.
Their bakery items are mostly competent and they do a good version of the most curious, Australian-flavour of pie being bacon, egg, mince and cheese. It’s the equivalent of a bacon and egg pie crossed with a mince and cheese pie and it is as puzzling as it is addictive. I quite like their donuts and a few people in the office are quite prone to their banh mis. These and their sandwiches also use the same meats as in the meal.
