Belles Hot Chicken, Richmond, Melbourne

This was my second experience of Belles Hot Chicken. Even though my first one was meh, I thought it might be worth giving it another go. This was the newer store in Richmond, and it was a more sleek experience. Although I ended up still feeling the same about the chain.

Love me tender

I know I have a few friends who are definite Belles Hot Chicken fans, even if I’m not. Swan Street on a weekend is an interesting location with the sports crowds. Spoiler alert: I’m not. This makes for fluctuating service: snappy staff initially, then mellow and nice. We were lucky to get a table without (mostly) a queue. I did notice some table stealing, which I do not approve of. It did get massively quieter, very quickly. I assume a match/ game thing started.

The menu at Belles Hot Chicken in Richmond is the same as the original store, at least of what I remember. Is it not expensive to people? $19 for four chicken tenders and one side – and if you want the luxury of mac and cheese being that side it’s another $1. Drumsticks, wings, fish and mushrooms are your other options. There’s five levels of heat you can get and I’m no good judge of this; but I went medium and it was medium. Go for you life, really!

Saved by the Belle

I went for the roasted yam salad as -hey- trying to be a tiny bit healthy and this was satisfactory. The chicken surely is the main thing but I don’t find it that exciting? It’s a bit dry, not that crispy, nothing that exciting about the sauce.

Then, if I think about some of the chicken I’ve eaten in Korea, Canada, Japan… There are more exciting flavour combinations and crispier, addictive batters. We had some lovely cocktails and service was eventually excellent. Everyone to their own – if you like Belles all the power to you.

P.s. sorry for the pic, it’s the best I could do with the lighting.
