Nene Chicken, La Trobe Street, Melbourne
I didn’t notice much of Nene Chicken when I was in South Korea. It is definitely big though, but perhaps I ignored since I knew there’s always a few here in Melbourne. The only ones I know in the city are the ones in Melbourne Central and La Trobe Street. I head into the latter for a burger this time. It’s pretty good actually although the wait is longer than your standard fast food fare.
Like the chicken, the burgers are all cooked to order. And for whatever reason, at Nene chicken that takes a little while. It’s not a super busy Wednesday evening, but I’d much prefer this scene that the crowds over at the night market. Also, everything there is expensive af. The bonus of this store is that there is some seating available. Melbourne Central has a couple tables but the flow of traffic doesn’t make for the most enjoyable ambience.
The burger costs about $10.50 but then there’s a fee whipped on for electronic transactions. Not a fan of this, I think prices should be able to capture those. For the fillet burger you have a choice of what sauce you want, and these are similar to the sauces on the chicken. One of the burgers we got was the double ranch (not sure exactly what is doubled) and then the swicy (sweet and spicy). The ranch works better for me as the swicy is a bit messy in burger form.
The chicken fillet is a good size and the vegetables are extremely chunky too. You probably do need some fries to go with, as one burger wasn’t enough for me. Otherwise a solid 3.5 stars as far as fried chicken burgers go.
