Supper Inn, Melbourne
I enjoy having a stock of late night eateries on my mental file in the eventuality that I ever need to grab a bite at after hours. On today’s occasion it had barely stroked 9pm and most of the options around the Chinatown area were out. In comes Supper Inn, which boasts an impressive 2.30am close time every day. It’s located in one of the laneways of Little Bourke and you’d miss if if it wasn’t for the conspicuous signage on a seemingly derelict building.
Up the flight of stairs you enter an awkward restaurant space chair-to-chair with patrons and was packed even in the late hour. Service was pretty shabby with staff not seemingly able to communicate leaving us some uncertainty whether the dishes we intended would arrive. In the spirit of most Asian cuisines, it’s intended for sharing, although on this occasion I opted to keep my roast pork chow mein to myself for meat-based reasons. The dish was well sized to fill a famished belly and had a home cooking feel to it. I enjoyed the contrast of the crunchy noodles that softened with the gravy. The prices on a whole were a bit higher than what I would have expected for the venue, but it’s fathomable with the opening hours and card payment options.
I also tried some of the pork dumplings and reports of the other ordered items from the table (san chow bow, vegetarian dumplings and fried rice) were also positive. Congee seemed a popular choice for the regulars and came out much faster than our dishes, which were dangerously nearing the twenty minute mark. Overall it’s a solid result and definitely worth keeping in mind for when you need.
