Shortstop Coffee and Donuts, Melbourne
How can I count the ways I think Shortstop Donuts are the bee’s knees? I’ve always made time to visit their stylish, slightly-hidden away little store and have been pleasantly surprised to get them on occasion as well. Once for work from a charitable few, and another on a very serendipitous occasion when my parents visited and we ran into their childhood neighbour’s nephew having their wedding in Melbourne. The odds. The connections had Shortstop donuts as wedding favours and I got a decent cut from the stash that day.
You can’t go wrong with any of the ever-evolving flavour ranges, but my absolute favourite goes to the humble crullers, which come in honey and sea salt and chocolate. The popular variants do sell and disappear at times it so it pays to get in early and often. I personally would avoid the fritter options (too dense) but the other ones (raised, cake and filled) are always good. Cruller>Filled>Cake>Raised>Fritter. Some of the inventive and interesting flavour combos include Earl grey and rose as well as the burnt caramel, fennel and sea salt. Nothing pleases me more in life than getting a box and splitting them all up with a group of good people to get a tasting of everything. Sharing is caring.
