Oregano Bakery, South Hurstville
I don’t quite understand the appeal of the hyperbole scrolls here. Excessively rich, excessively priced and not something I’d particularly want to eat. Oregano recently opened up a pop-up store (or should that be stall?) in Melbourne Central offering these heavy, sugar-laden treats at six dollars a piece, or nearer closing time, three for ten dollars. They look inoffensive enough and come in a wide variety of flavours including salted caramel, cinnamon, coffee, chelsea bun, cookies and cream and a heap more flavours.
For me I simply can’t get much satisfaction eating something so dense and sugary as this. The scrolls over at Eat a Scroll are smaller and lighter and I can appreciate those a little more as a gentle baked bite. That’s not to say the quality here isn’t bad with the salted caramel and general fillings being generous and proportionate. Flavours are integrated throughout the full scroll for a genuine difference in alternate flavours.
Getting three scrolls is absolutely insane but my friend Joey can’t resist a deal and when cut up, this box makes for a serious amount of saccharine comas. They do quite well when heated a little in the micro ‘o wave. High price aside, even the sight of these makes me tremble a little.
