Jimmy Grants, Emporium, Melbourne
I am a fan of this Greek food empire and Jimmy Grants is perfect when I need a food court-type fix. Occupying a niche away from sister restaurants Gazi and Hellenic Republic, Jimmy Grants is handy when you need a casual bite whilst out and about. In the Emporium food court everything is pretty up there. Jimmy Grants holds its own, taking you to a little part of modern Greek Melbourne.
Get him to the Greek
Commentary about Calombaris aside, I’ve had little exposure to food from Greece. So this so this has been a welcome introduction to some of the cuisine. Each of his restaurants plays it a little differently and over the years I’ve managed to visit most of them. I’d say Jimmy Grants is the lowest tier of the lot, but that being said a souv and sides will set you back $20+.
I didn’t quite realise how early Emporium starts to close. But the staff at Jimmy Grants were nice enough to let us have the last order. Apparently we might have helped nudge them over the daily target. I’ll happily take that credit. Due to busy-ness they were out of some options and ended up doing some ingredients substitutions. This worked out better for me in the end anyhow.
The best things in life
I should mention I did have an Entertainment Voucher in tow, so one of our meals was free. Whoop. My order was for the 2am souvlaki, which included lamb, fries, slaw. The name didn’t entirely make sense at the time. But then I remembered the standard has no slaw, but lettuce, garlic sauce, tomato like the kebab staples. Duh Sam!
At $16.90 for the wrap I’m quite comforted by the discount. The food is wholesome good and they pack a happy amount of meat. (Surprising they underpay staff when they charge that much heh). Probably not the freshest pita but I was happy to get fed at that hour and it’s not too much of a mess to eat. Had I had the juicy lettuce/ tomato it would have likely been. The quality of the meat is good and it’s a very satisfying meal. Although my friend would have been happy with a side of fries, we ended up getting a couple more snacks instead.
A solid option for food court eatin’. (Still prefer Stalactites with its 24 hours and magic meat goodness).
