HuTong Dumpling Bar, Melbourne
HuTong Dumpling Bar features pretty prominently in many people’s top dumpling lists, so being in a dumpling-sort-of-mood we decided to head along. Not sure if it’s a booking type of place, but we headed in and was lucky (?) to find a table pretty easily in what was a very busy restaurant. Service was somewhat uneasy over the course of our stay, they were efficient though. Probably as they want to get tables turned out pretty quickly I guess.
Food came pretty quick, and we ordered a mix of dishes and a few dumpling ones for good measure. They ended up being the better of the selections although I was happy with everything in total. I liked the sizzle part (or whatever it’s called) the dumplings came in and the dough was fresh and thin with the filling meaty and well, filling. I had particularly high hopes for the shao long bao but I don’t think it ascended beyond good and on the table I ended up eating most of them after hyping it up. Mixed emotions.
In a moment of weakness we ordered a vegetable dish. This was regrettable. Nah, it was okay. Last to the table was the crispy spring chicken with garlic and this was standard asian takeout fare. Meat was a bit on the dry side and garlic was subtle to the level we questioned if it was forgotten or not, but was to polite to enquire. Anyway, food’s not too bad at HuTong Dumpling but probably doesn’t need to be hyped up any more.
