Hakata Gensuke, QV Melbourne
There’s a brand new Hakata Gensuke, and this one’s in the QV Centre and specialises in chicken ramen options only for a vector of difference. The normal store I frequent on Russell Street often has a Centrelink-sized queue, so I was keen to check out how they compare here with a reduced wait time. Christina and I arrived at a weird twilight afternoon hour, so no troubles getting a table and the food arrived as quick as any. We weren’t super hungry on account of the non-stop eating from earlier in the day, so we shared a signature chicken tori ramen ($12) and a chicken karage ($3).
The ramen was pretty good. Chicken isn’t quite as satisfying as the equivalent in pork, as the broth doesn’t quite have the same saltiness and richness as the bones used there. Still a quality ramen and the chicken broth itself was still excellent, perhaps avoid doing the easy comparisons. Bamboo shoots were nice and the slices were functional. Black garlic and sesame option might have added a necessary punch. The chicken karage was alike to the other store and carried that tasty dipping powder. Would love to find a bag of chips with this dust. Just roll me in it.
