Shanklin Cafe, Hawthorn, Melbourne
Shanklin Cafe in Hawthorn gave me one of my best brunches in quite a while! I loved the menu options, the service was attentive and it made for such a perfect chill factor. This time I enjoyed the savoury options the most, but Shanklin otherwise ticks all the boxes for beautiful brunch bliss.
We ended up getting another table’s order the first time round but that made for extra photo opportunities! Shanklin Cafe in Hawthorn East is an ultra modern coffee house. The crowds definitely pack in for a Saturday morning, with plenty of pooches and strollers. There’s only a tiny little wait before you can begin your breakfast bliss.
Service was super warm at Shanklin Cafe and we were well looked after during our morning. The server was so friendly, some good side banter.
We also had the company of some super cute dogs on both sides. It’s a popular spot for the locals here and many of them get to take their four-legged friends for the adventure. Don’t worry though – this is just outside, which is a perfect spot on a sunny day like this.
Belly of the beast
When we get our actual order, it’s to our standards for sure. Everything looks so delectable with brilliant bursts of colour and we’re already thrilled before we try the dishes. My dish is the pork belly with an apple slaw and my flatmate went with the salmon on rosti. We should warn you, the dishes are huge – so bring your morning appetite.
The pork belly has that desirable crunch in the cracking and is married perfectly with the sweetness and zest of the apple slaw. The slaw is a bit on the acidic side for me, though there is even some fresh chilli for that little kick. It’s a great looking dish and it’s such a treat to have pork belly in the morning.
We ended with a sweet ending in the form of the pancakes. The chocolate sauce is delicious and the presentation has wow factor, but the pancakes were a bit dry for us. We were thrilled with the savoury items we had from Shanklin and would recommend making a trip to Hawthorn for it.
