Breakfast Thieves, Fitzroy
An interesting menu delivered with refined touches and friendly service. For our first serious brunch for a visiting friend, I took her to one of my favourite brunches nearby at the Breakfast Thieves. Coming on a weekday feels very different, with no queue and a choice of tables so we can enjoy the industrial funk of the cafe. Service is friendly and fast and she went with the french toast option. The Babe in Black Forest is a brioche french toast with chocolate soil, mandarin curd, vanilla mascarpone, cherry and candied bacon. She loved this dish, with the candied bacon popping the dish and a great portion size. Not crazy sugar syrup and kept delicate with the fruit.
I went for the Legend, which was Breakfast Thieves’ take on baked eggs with hot chorizo, mushrooms, green peans, corn, pumpkin and feta with herbed garlic toast. I quite liked this dish, there’s a bit of a surprise kick to it but the flavours are all complementary. I probably could have done without the corn/ peas myself but the sauce was nice and felt a little Mexican almost in execution.
Breakfast Thieves does an excellent job of an upmarket lunch around these parts, with an interesting menu and colourful touches on the presentation. Other items from the menu have also been highly satisfactory and the coffee is great too.
