Rockwell & Sons, Collingwood
I consider myself pretty fortunate to live pretty much next door to Rockwell & Sons, which some say does one of Melbourne’s best burgers and I tend to agree. Joey and I have always really enjoyed the fried broccoli side, tantalisingly crisp with a tasty creamy sauce with cheese.
There’s detailed analysis of the Double Smash Patty burger over at Burgers of Melbourne and I agreed the sauce and the meat were great, but disagreed that it wasn’t enough of a meal – it was a definite appetite pleaser for me and my fellow diner. And it’s worthwhile. The chicken and steak options are also fabulous.
The trick of any journey to Rockwell & Sons is to order a few sides to go with, as well as the fried broccoli the fried mozzarella is also a winner. I realise it’s basically fried fat, but that was one of the best starter/ sides I’ve had in a good while. So, so satisfying. Service at Rockwell & Sons is generally excellent and the staff look after you well. One of the managers had much too sass for our liking on one occasion but that was a one off.
Another side, almost equivalent to fried fat is the fried crackling. Not quite as exciting as I was hoping for (these are the puffy style) and the sauce is a bit overwhelming, otherwise a fine and sizeable side item.
Pro tip: not open Monday and some other times I think
