Neko Neko, Collingwood
Japanese places are really abuzz in my locale and Neko Neko is a cute little spot on the corner of Gertrude and Smith Street where the 86 often takes a minute break to let some hideously drunk teens on. It’s a small little cafe and was plenty busy when I popped in for a mid-weekish meal, so much so I had to end up sitting on a very awkward corner for most of it sandwiched between happy and laughing couples. Boo my life. But also:
I ordered the two-plated teishoku with the “superfood” agedashi tofu with shiitake mushrooms. The menu had a bit of a health angle to it which I don’t mind, made for a nice change from some of the grill and fry options you get in Japanese places. Though there were croquettes too. When it arrived it was definitely a sizeable portion of tofu in a delightful savoury broth with an enjoyable sticky coating and toasted seed topping. Could have done with a bit more of a flavour punch for me.
It was accompanied by an array of various pickles and vegetables, I couldn’t quite work out what everything was but some were more palatable than others for me. I assume they were vegetables, anyway. Overall a nicely balanced dish with lots of variety making for clockwork eating. Since I was pretty close to my eating neighbours I got good whiffs of their dishes and would be highly tempted to come back for the curry. It smelt amazing and I was tossing up switch up my original order for it but I hate being annoying like that.
Pro tip: probably mix up the choices for a bit of variety
