Mr Scruff’s, Collingwood, Melbourne
After many, many failed attempts to hit up Mr Scruff’s on a Wednesday, I finally managed it and was pleased with the results. The trick with this place is that it’s half price on this particular day of the week, so it all gets a little manic. I assume the many other patrons were frequenting for the very same reason, and the scene gets a bit claustrophobic with the crowd. It’s an elbow and a leer for getting a table (and a decent one at that) although the bar is pretty big so you have a choice of picks. Try and make yourself known to the waitstaff, otherwise you can potentially have a 10 minute old burger whilst they get stuck navigating and trying to locate you for your order.
Naturally we over-ordered, and everything was delivered in boxes which made for easy escapes and quick table changes. We had one of the beef and chicken burgers, beer battered fries, black olive salty pretzel, eggplant chips, chickpea cakes and confit lamb ribs. This was two people and came to less than $15 per person. Crazy. Everything was surprisingly good, and despite all coming out of the fryer, it didn’t leave too greasy of a taste. I thought the burgers were great even at the full price points but my fave was the eggplant chips crusted in corn chips. A clever, tasty idea. The truffled chickpea cakes weren’t great, should have skipped those (but the truffled aioli was nice).
I am glad that I managed to check it out, but I probably wouldn’t want to endure that experience again purely for a cheap meal. Service and ambience is too crap.
