F.A.T. Fried and Tasty, Brunswick East, Melbourne
My first experience with F.A.T. Fried and Tasty in Brunswick East wasn’t overly spectacular, but the guys were super nice and invited me back in for another try. It’s southern-styled menu with a fried chicken focus. There’s some good stuff, and then there’s some stuff that ends up being a little more flat. The staff are really friendly though and Fried and Tasty makes for a charming little haunt in the north.
Back in the day when F.A.T Fried and Tasty first opened, there with some controversy. A minor celebrity was offended by the use of Notorious B.I.G. in the store’s branding. I don’t particularly care myself, but that’s when I first came across the name. My eyes laser focused towards the fried chicken mention and I knew I’d want to check it out eventually. I still have awfully fond memories of Gus’s fried chicken when I was in Memphis. This was truly otherworldly, but sadly I haven’t had a chicken taste as good since.
In Melbourne land, and Fried and Tasty land,I went with the chicken with one side option. Every now and then, I try to be healthy by ordering a salad. But the green salad, was a green and white salad as overdressed as it was. This made it much to salty, so it couldn’t quite be enjoyed. I ended up diving into the (thankfully) communal fries. The chicken itself is excellent, not my favourite coating but tender and crispy.
Now to the second visit to Fried and Tasty. It was a marked improvement and delivered in terms of, well, being fried and tasty. We went with a slight change of pace and ordered the chicken tenders with a side of corn, a chicken burger, and a serve of poutine for the Canadian. The burger was impressively huge with a full on chicken breast, bacon, beetroot, lettuce, cheese, BBQ sauce and mayo. I couldn’t help but feel it was still a bit ordinary though.
The seasoning on the tenders was great and we quite liked the dipping it came with – make sure to let the tenders cool a bit before diving straight in.The poutine isn’t a proper one, but it’s fries with gravy and cheese so it’s still makes me happy.
We also had two milkshakes worth mentioning – the apple crumble and Snickers. These were huge, super thick and creamy. Like our stomachs. There’s also alcoholic options, and these can be nursed for the full session.
We ended our night with a sweet finish in the form of the buttermilk waffles served with vanilla ice-cream and Canadian Maple syrup. The maple syrup was a wicked treat on the waffle and was the meal with a perfect end for our decadent night. Fried, tasty and now full. Thanks F.A.T.
