Bosphorus Kebabs, South Kensington, London
Amazing hole-in-the-wall kebabs. I had two friends over from home and Zomato pointed us to Bosphorus Kebabs as the highest rated food place in South Kensington. And we agree! It looks like your ordinary kebab-type joint with a quirky name. But once you’ve tasted it, you’ll know the pleasure levels are high and the prices are even lower. You don’t find this cheap in this part of town. After all, I think we may have ended up spending more on the dainty eclairs from Maitre Choux.
We went for a mix of the wings and mixed grill plates in various sizes (£6.60 for a small). See menu as above, there’s a lot of options really. Each plate comes with heated pita bread and a pile of salad, chilli sauce, as well as the glorious meat. There’s a tasty char on every bite and it’s marinated for a burst of flavour. Succulent. Yes, that’s how I describe the meat. It’s cooked to order, and dare I say, a little on the overcooked side as they prefer to be cautious. But that extra time on the grill results in a much more smokier flavour of the meat. I’m not sure how the kitchen staff survive as that grill be burnin’.
There’s also a charming wall display at Bosphorus Kebab of all the notes left from other satisfied customers over the years. It feels like a place with a special custom and history. Lots of personal touches in the notes, some hyperbole best kebabs, it’s my saving grace, etc etc. Anyway, admiring that display took away from the staff arguing loudly in the kitchen, lol. I did mention it gets hot in the restaurant, didn’t I?
Note that Bosphorus Kebabs does need a little time (8 min at least) to make sure it’s cooked through. Of course we conclude its worth the wait. Due to its proximity to South Kensington tube station and the sheer number of offices in this area, it’s a place that would definitely get a crowd during peak lunch time.
My only other tip is that I would have happily upgraded to the larger size as the portions aren’t quite to the levels up in the North. E.g. Kervan Sofrasi. That’s not a slight to how much I enjoyed my time here though. But yeah, Medium size platter or higher, baby.
