Dum Dum Donutterie, Shoreditch, London
Merry Christmas! I’m not big on the festive occasion but I’m always a sucker for any themed food. I popped along to Dum Dum Donutterie in Boxpark, Shoreditch on my very first stroll around my new neighbourhood. I picked up one of the Rudolph the reindeer-inspired items but unfortunately it wasn’t a great donut at all. It wasn’t fresh and the dry filling made me rank this lower than the Tesco supermarket variety (which is alright).
It was the final day of the shopping year so I wonder if that meant they were serving up not-so-fresh donuts. Anyway I’m of the view that it’s better not to serve it up if its not going to be a great experience. The dough tasted stale as did the filling. But it looks nice at least!
Boxpark is a neat little stretch of container-ship shops and eateries. Kinda reminds me of in Christchurch when a similiar thing was established, though, that was largely out of need. Here it’s more of a style. I can dig this.
Here and there
Dum Dum Donutterie started in 1997 and is a franchise operation. There are stores in Brighton, Shoreditch and Croydon, as well as being sold at Harrods. This time of year they had some Christmas ones on offer. This enticed me in and enticed me into a purchase. Look how cute they all are in that window.
My choice was the (gotta get this right): Rudi – the Reindough. It’s a baked donut filled with a Lotus Biscuit butter cream and frosted with caramel fondant with a pretzel and Smartie as decoration. The fondant was good but once I bit in it just tasted like dry. And then when you finally get to the buttercream, it’s not flowing, it’s kind of a hardened lump.
Not this time
Maybe if I had it on the day it was made I would have really liked it? But here I think this should have headed into yesterday’s bin. Maybe next time, Dum Dum Donutterie.
