Angelato, Staré Město, Prague
If you need a sweet treat on a hot Prague day, Angelato is the place to be. The crowd was of the same mind too, with a minor queue before you get your mitts on to some top quality gelato. The flavours are quite funky, I had a jasmine rice one and a mascarpone and fig scoop. Olive oil and basil was another out there flavour. Nice and innovative. The quality at Angelato was excellent, there was a nice texture to the gelato.
The line depletes at a refreshingly speedy rate and then you’re almost in reach of assessing the flavours. The system is nice and efficient. You order and pay for your selection before taking a right and selecting your flavours.
The rice one tasted exactly how I imagined, almost like a rice pudding in a cup. Easy to eat and enjoyably light. I liked that both flavours didn’t taste overly sweet. That means also missing out the dreaded sugar kick that you can get some gelato places. Of the two scoops in my cup I did prefer the seasonal flavour – the figs provide a nice punchiness to contrast the smoothness of the mascarpone.
Angelato started life almost ten years ago with the simple idea of producing high quality ice-cream. The three founders had completely different backgrounds with no culinary experience: an economist and two students. That was a long time ago and that spontaneous challenge has since evolved to an inspiring dream of achieving what they set out to do.
The guys at Angelato definitely know their stuff and it’s my top pick for a dessert. No doubt the team have learned a few tricks over the last decade as they continue to perfect their art as well as taking bold steps on new flavours. They have long hours too, especially over summer which is perfect for making sure you don’t miss out. Another option if you’re looking for a sundae-like treat, or something a bit more of a sit down experience: Cacao has you sorted.
